ThisDay: US Congressman Writes John Kerry, Accuses Buhari of Autocratic Tendencies, Selective Anti-Graft War

Tom Marino A member of the United States Congress, Tom Marino, has written a letter to Secretary of State, John Kerry, asking the US government to withhold security assistance to Nigeria until President Muhammadu Buhari demonstrates a “commitment to inclusive government and the most basic tenets of democracy: freedom to assemble and freedom of speech”. He also asked the State Department to refrain from selling warplanes and other military equipment to Nigeria until President Buhari establishes a track record of working towards inclusion.

The Periodical Cicada’s Timing

CICADAS, insects resembling locusts, live on all continents except Antarctica. Unique to the northeast of America, however, are the periodical cicadas, which have long fascinated biologists. Consider: Millions of periodical cicadas appear suddenly in the spring for just a few weeks. During their short time in the sun, they shed their juvenile skin, sing deafeningly, fly, reproduce, and then die. Strangely, the next generation appears either 13 or 17 years later, depending on the species. What happens to these insects in the meantime?

Angola Yellow Fever Outbreak, Still A Serious Issue – W.H.O

In the on-going battle against the yellow fever outbreak in Angola and the Democratic Republic Of The Congo (DRC), the World Health Organization says although it is currently not a public health emergency of international concern, it however remains a very serious issue. According to the W.H.O, About 6,000 people in Angola and Democratic Republic of Congo may be infected with yellow fever, six times the number of confirmed cases, but no new infections have been found since July 12; what the organisation describes as an “extremely positive” trend.

Nigeria Declares State Of Emergency On Sports

The Federal Government has declared a state of emergency on sports. The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Solomon Dalung, made the declaration in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory. The announcement was made on Thursday shortly after the Minister received the report on the Olympic Games presented by the Sports Reform Committee.
